Does Car Insurance Companies Check your Credit Score?
Reader’s Question:
Are all insurance companies in Taylorsville, Utah uses credit score to determine your Utah auto insurance quotes?
Wood
Taylorsville, UT
Not all insurance companies check credit score when an individual buys car insurance so you may be able to find one in Taylorsville UT that would not check your credit record as part of their rating process.
The best thing that you can do is to shop around for car insurance quote. You may find an insurer that does not check or you might find that using credit score, as a rating factor will still provide you a competitive rate.
When you are applying for auto insurance you may ask the agent or insurance carrier about whether and how credit score will be used in the rating and underwriting process. There is a good chance your current insurance carrier will be looking at your credit information as one part of the total rating factors that are examined when calculating rates.
Should I Add my Teenager to my Car Insurance Policy?
Reader’s Question:
I am divorced and my teenage son stays with his dad every other weekend. In a couple of months, he is going to get his driver’s license. Is there a law regarding adding him to my policy? He will be using one of my cars which has insurance on my name. Do I need to list him on my policy? What about him being added to his dad’s policy since he occasionally drives one of his cars. I live in North Davis, Utah if that matters.
Louisa
North Davis, UT
Majority of car insurance companies would want to have information about other household members who have regular access to your cars. They would ask you to either list that person as ‘eligible’ to drive or ‘excluded’ from driving. If you want your son to be covered in cases of accidents, then you will need to inform your insurance company when he obtains his license (or permit). Most likely, your insurance company will require you to place him as an eligible driver on the policy.
It may seem confusing as to which parent’s auto insurance policy would children of divorced parents be included. Usually, the parent who has custody of the child should add the child to his or her policy as what many insurance providers suggest. In some cases, a parent has custody of the teen when the child is attending school. It would be wise to ask your insurance agent about the specific policy guidelines.
The teen will normally be covered by both parents’ policies if both parents are insured by the same company regardless of whether the child is listed as a driver on either policy. This is because some insurance policies define “an insured” as a person related to you by blood, marriage, or adoption who is a resident of your household. You will need to read through your policy language and/or contact North Davis, UT insurance agent for details since not all policies are the same.
Buying Car Insurance in Utah
Reader’s Question:
Do I insure the vehicle or the motorist in Utah? Does every person must have car insurance or is the car insurance enough?
Dean
Provo, UT
Car insurance is needed for the vehicle but the motorist will need to show proof that there is valid insurance on the car if stopped by law enforcement officer. If you own a vehicle you insure your car but you and any other licensed household members should be listed as drivers.
If you give permission to a friend that is not a member of your household to borrow the vehicle then normally they will be covered under your car insurance, but some insurance policies have exclusions in them so it is best to check with your auto insurance provider to be certain that your friend is covered by your policy before allowing a friend to drive it.
Make sure not drive your vehicle without insurance or permit someone that would not be covered by your insurance policy to do so because if an individual is convicted in a court or found through a Department of Public Safety (DPS) administrative hearing to have been driving a car without insurance, the DMV may suspend the uninsured vehicle’s registration.
How to Get Cheap SR22 Insurance in Utah
Q: I don’t get a chance to drive much since I work right near home and am doing some exercise by riding my bike to work, but I do use my car when I need to go across town or pick up my daughter from college on holidays, so I need my SSR22 insurance. I’d just like to know if there’s a way for me to get a cheaper deal on it?
A: Since you use your car infreqently, you can choose beween two options if you want to save money. One would be to simply drop your car insurance policy alogether and allow your license to be suspended. However, this option might only work for you if you have another driver in the house or a friend who is willing to drive you around when you need it.
Another way you can go is to try to get discounts on your Salt Lake City SR22 insurance policy so you can pay less. One discount that you would definitely qualify for would be a low mileage discount. Almost every car insurance company will give you this discount, but you have to use few enough miles to qualify. Every company has its own requirements, but the most common ones are five thousand miles in a year or forty miles in a day, and not above.
Should I Remove Additional Car Insurance Coverage?
Q: I’m trying hard to pay off my car along with my West Valley City SR22 insurance every month, but it’s so difficult. Do you think if I dropped the exrta coverage my car financer will find out?
A: It’s not certain that they will find out, but if I were you I wouldn’t risk the possibility of getting your car repossessed if they do. In addition to that, dropping to minimum liability while you’re still paying off a car is very dangerous. If you get into a car accident, you could lose your car and still have housands of dollars to pay off before you could even think of getting a new one. You would ruin your credit and they would probably take you to court, as well.
Instead of taking drastic measures with your West Valley City SR22 coverage, try raising your deductibles on your extra coverages instead. If you assume a thousand dollars more in risk than what you have right now, you could save hundreds of dollars easily.
A deductible is what you have to pay out to your West Valley City SR22 car insurance company when you get into an accident before your insurance will kick in. In order to be safe, make sure you keep some money to the side so you’ll be able to pay your deductibles in the event of a crash.
What Car Insurance Coverage Should I Get with SR22?
Q: What level of coverage am I required to have on my Orem SR22 policy?
A: In Utah, you must have liabiliy coverage on your Orem SR22 in order to meet the legal requirements. As to the levels of coverage required for liability, you must have fifty thousand dollars for death and bodily injury per accident, with twenty five thousand dollars per person; and you must also have fifteen thousand dollars of property damage liability coverage.
While these are the only limits you need on your Orem SR22 in order to follow the law, they are pretty low according to many car insurance agents. Suggesed limits are often higher to protect you the most in a car accident, and tend to be around three hundred thousand dollars for bodily injury and death per accident and one hundred thousand dollars for property damage.
In addition to the state required coverages, you may also have to add comprehensive and collision coverage to your Orem SR22 policy if you are buying or leasing your car. Although this is not a requirement of the state, it is usually a requirement of the financer, and failing to get it could end in the repossession of your car.
Penalties for Driving Without Car Insurance for Teens in Utah
Reader’s Question:
I just want to know the penalties for driving without insurance in salt lake city, Utah for a minor?
Kelly
Thank you for asking Kelly.
The law requires drivers to carry proof of insurance and must be presented upon request to any law enforcement officer .
If the owner of a motor vehicle fails to provide satisfactory proof of insurance after receipt of the letter, that information will be provided to the Tax Commission’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), and state and local law enforcement.
If a person is convicted in a court or found through a Department of Public Safety (DPS) administrative hearing to have been driving without insurance, the DMV may suspend the uninsured vehicle’s registration or driving privilege.
If you fail to provide insurance or operator’s security is a Class B misdemeanor, for which the fine may not be less than $400 for a first offense; and $1,000 for a second and subsequent offense within three years of a previous conviction or bail forfeiture.

How Long Do I Have to Carry SR22 in Utah?
Reader’s Question:
I just want to know for how long do I have to carry the sr22. I live in Utah. What is the Utah auto insurance requirement?
Jeff
Thank you for asking Jeff.
In Utah, it actually depend upon the reason for the SR-22 to be required to an individual that determines the length that you must carry the SR22.
The UT Department of Motor Vehicle site states that if you were found operating a vehicle without insurance the law requires the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to maintain proof of the person’s owner’s or operator’s financial responsibility for a three-year period and the insurance company must inform DPS if the insurance policy is terminated or cancelled. If an individual who has been cited under this law cancels his or her insurance policy, the individual must surrender his or her driver license to DPS.
This proof of financial responsibility certificate must be maintained for three years following the date of the suspension or revocation or, in the case of an unsatisfied judgment, three years from the date of reinstatement. Most of the time, people choose to purchase an sr22 to meet the states liability requirement.
You may get more information on financial responsibility by calling the Financial Responsibility Section, Driver License Division at phone number (801) 965-4393.
